What you need

Phone: Android 6.0 or newerWith GPS. Every rider in the group needs the app.
Account: Phone number, or sign in with GooglePlus your bike number (or pillion) and an emergency contact before your first group ride.

Permissions

What Coroute asks for, and why.

In plain words. Location and microphone are used only while you are in an active ride.

You can take any permission back in your phone's settings. Coroute then works in a limited way.

Location Needed So your group can see where you are during a ride, and you can see them.

Location in the background Needed So your group still sees you with the phone in your pocket or the screen locked. Only during an active ride.

Microphone For the intercom, only while you hold Talk or use hands-free talk. Never recorded.

Notifications For ride alerts, emergencies and the ride notification with the riders ahead and behind.

Run in the background Keeps GPS, the intercom and the connection to your group going with the screen locked. Android shows a notification while it runs.

Unrestricted battery use Some phones close apps in the background after a few minutes. This stops that during a long ride.

Full-screen alarm So the crash alarm and the hold-to-send SOS screen can open over the lock screen.

Send SMS Only if you switch it on Used only to text for help when your SOS cannot be sent over the internet. Sent from your own SIM.

Bluetooth connect Never asked Listed in the app, but Coroute does not ask for it and no feature depends on it. On Android 12 and newer it shows as "Nearby devices: not allowed", and that is fine.

Internet, network state, keep awake, vibrate The basics: talk to the server, notice when the signal drops, keep the ride running, and buzz for alerts.

The motion sensor for crash detection needs no permission. It is read on your phone only, during a ride. Spoken alerts use your phone's own text-to-speech.

Installing

Install from the download

The download is an APK file from this site. Android asks once before it installs apps from outside an app store.

Tap Download for Android and wait for the file to finish.
Open the downloaded file from the notification or your Downloads folder.
If Android asks, allow your browser to install apps. You can switch this off again afterwards.
Tap Install, then Open.
Sign up, add your emergency contact, and run the pre-ride checklist.

Updates

When you need a new version, the app tells you and links to the download. Install it over the current app. Your account and your rides stay.

The newest version is always on this page.

Privacy

Your location is shared only with your ride group, only during the ride. Voice is never recorded. No ads, no trackers, no sale of data.
