How it works
Create. Join. Ride.
One person sets up the ride. Everyone else joins with a code. Then the group rides as one, on one map.
The three steps
-
Create
The lead names the ride, sets the destination and adds stops. Coroute gives a six-digit ride code and an invite link.
Creating a ride -
Join
Riders enter the code or open the link. They appear on the map, and see the route and the stops.
Joining a ride -
Ride
See the group, talk, regroup at stops, and raise SOS if something goes wrong. End the ride and it is saved for everyone.
During the ride
In detail
Everything that happens, in order.
Before your first ride
Install Coroute and sign up with your phone number, or sign in with Google. Every rider needs the app and an account.
Before you can ride in a group, add your bike number (or say you ride pillion) and an emergency contact. Only the members of your ride group can see them.
You can also add medical info: blood group, allergies and short notes. It is optional. Your group sees it only while your SOS or crash alert is open.
Create the ride
Example code.
The lead creates the ride. Give it a name and set the destination. Add stops on the way if you want them: Fuel, Food, Rest, Meeting point, or a plain Stop.
The ride code
Coroute gives the ride a six-digit code. Read it out at the meeting point, or send it in your group chat. Up to 50 riders can join one ride.
The invite link
You can also share an invite link. On a phone with Coroute, the link opens the app with the code already filled in. On a phone without it, the link shows the code and a download button.
The pre-ride checklist
Before the ride starts, a short checklist goes through permissions, battery, your emergency contact and a kit list for fuel, gear and papers. It stays on your phone.
Join the ride
Tap Join and enter the code, or open the invite link. You appear on the map at once, and you see the other riders, the route and the planned stops.
Permissions Coroute asks for, and why
Android asks you for each one. Coroute explains why first.
Every permission can be taken back in your phone's settings. Coroute then works in a limited way. The full list is on the download page.
During the ride
Your position is shared with your ride group, and only with them, while the ride is on. It keeps going with the screen off. Android shows a notification while this happens.
- Everyone sees every rider on the map, with distance ahead and behind and the group spread.
- Hold to talk to the group, or pick one rider to talk to privately. Voice is not recorded.
- One-tap quick replies: Fuel stop, Wait for me, All good, Slow down, and more.
- Riders are marked as they reach each stop. A stop is done when everyone is there.
- If you leave the route, Coroute works out a new one from where you are.
- The ride notification shows the nearest riders ahead and behind, with SOS, Wait for me and Open map.
- If something goes wrong, hold SOS. How safety works.
Without signal, your route is kept on the phone and sent when the connection returns. An SOS waits and is sent then too.
Ending the ride
When the group arrives, the lead taps End ride. Live location sharing stops for the whole group, and the ride is saved for everyone.
Any rider can tap Leave ride earlier. Their location sharing stops at once. Signing out stops it too.
After the ride
The ride goes into your history. Open it to see the trip report: each rider's route in their own colour, distance, riding time, stops and top speed.
The group timeline lists who stopped and for how long, who fell behind and who lost signal. You can replay the whole ride, share a ride card, or save your own route as a GPX file.
Recorded routes are deleted after 90 days. Your account and ride summaries stay until you delete them.
Questions
Short answers.
Is Coroute free?
Yes. There is no subscription, no paid tier and no advertising. Coroute is run as a non-profit public service.
How many riders can join one ride?
Up to 50 riders in one ride group.
Does every rider need the app?
Yes. Each rider needs Coroute on an Android phone, an account, and the ride code or invite link.
Is there an iPhone version?
Coroute is Android only. No iOS version yet.
Does it work without mobile data?
Coroute needs mobile data to share positions and for the intercom. When the signal drops, your route is kept on your phone and sent later, and an SOS waits and sends when the signal returns.
If you switched on emergency texts, your phone can also send an SMS to your emergency contact and the nearest riders when an SOS cannot get through.
How much data does it use?
Audio is sent only while someone talks. For prepaid plans and weak signal, turn on data saver: the intercom then uses half the data, and your position is sent every 5 seconds instead of every 2.5.
Who can see my location?
Only the members of the ride you are in, and only while you are in it. It stops when you leave, when the ride ends, or when you sign out. No location is collected when you are not in a ride. In an emergency you raise, a rider from another group who is asked to help sees only the emergency point. Privacy policy.
Is the intercom recorded?
No. Voice is relayed live and discarded. Only who talked to whom and for how long is kept, for 7 days, to detect abuse.
Will it drain my battery?
Any app that uses GPS for hours uses battery. Coroute slows GPS updates when you stop, keeps one connection open instead of checking again and again, and sends audio only while someone talks. On long rides, keep the phone charging if you can.
Does Coroute replace calling for help?
No. In an emergency in India, call 112. Coroute helps your group know and respond. Read how safety works.
Ready for the next ride?
Free on Android. Every rider in the group needs the app.
